Special Exhibition: The World of Japanese Yōkai

Special Exhibition: The World of Japanese Yōkai

Yōkai are said to have originated from a combination of reverence for nature and human anxieties. From the Edo period onward, various kinds of yōkai emaki (illustrated scrolls) were created, and the development of woodblock printing further propelled the spread of yōkai culture. Sometimes fearsome, sometimes endearing, yōkai have captivated countless people. This exhibition introduces the world of yōkai, centered on the Yumoto Koichi Memorial Japan Yōkai Museum (Miyoshi Mononoke Museum).
