If the cyclist is 16 years old or older, they can ride with one infant under 6 years old on an infant-seat or on cyclist’s back firmly tied down with a baby carrier. You cannot carry your child on your front (see the images below).
While helmets are not mandatory, it is strongly recommended to that they be worn for safety purposes.
If you are 16 years or older and have a bicycle specially designed to carry two infants, then you can ride with two children under the age of 6 years old. You can let two children sit on infant-seats (front and rear) or you can let one sit on a infant-seat and carry another one on your back with a baby carrier. You are not allowed to ride with 3 children like indicated in the image below. It is is strongly recommended to make children wear helmets for their safety.
Electric assist bicycles are convenient especially when riding up a steep road and when riding with children.
Even if you have only have one child, it is recommended that you use a bike with two infant seats as it is made to be stronger and more stable, and as a bonus you can also carry (shopping) bags on the other seat. As mentioned above, make sure that the bike has the two stickers for your safety. You can also do a test-ride with your children at certain shops (please see below for the list).
It is important to purchase a bicycle that meets safety standards.
Please make sure the bicycle has these two stickers, “BAA” (Bicycle Association Approved) and “幼児2人同乗基準適合車” by Japan Bicycle Association. A bike that meets the more strict requirements than the BAA mark is “幼児2人同乗基準適合車” (a bike that complies with the two infants riding standard).
Two-children-compatible bicycles are designed to be safe to ride under special conditions, such as a three-seater vehicle that weighs more than usual, and that the infant can change its balance by putting it forward and backward. For example, the frame is strengthened and the handle is easily controlled etc. Please use these logos as a guide when choosing a bicycle to ride with your children.
There are slight differences between a Front Infant-Seat and Back Infant-Seat. Please choose the appropriate one according to your child’s age and physique. Reference: How to Choose an E-bike - Panasonic
