BOOKOFF is the most famous second-hand shop with 800 locations in Japan. It offers not only second hand books, but also CDs, DVDs, cell phones, cameras, home appliances, musical instruments, clothes, sporting goods, trading cards, toys, baby goods, brand-name goods, precious metals, and daily necessities. Although the items are used, they are in very good condition, so you can purchase valuable items at reasonable prices. They also buy used / unwanted items, which is convenient when you move from Japan.

There are 4 ways how you can sell items at BOOKOFF. If you do not speak Japanese, bringing items for sale to one of the BOOKOFF stores might be the easiest way. To sell items at BOOKOFF, you would need a valid ID such as My Number Card, Zairyu Card, etc. Certain services do not have options of receiving money in cash and involve bank transfer. If there is a BOOKOFF store nearby, or if you have items that you can bring in, it is convenient to bring your items directly to the store. Click the store finder to find one, bring it in. The fee will be calculated on the spot and you will be paid in cash. At more than 600 stores in Japan, you can also choose a cashless payment. If you prefer to have items picked up from your home, there is a very convenient service called 宅配買取. Simply apply online, pack unwanted goods in a box, and a courier will come to your place to pick it up. You will be paid by bank transfer in about a week. BOOKOFF also offers two other methods you can use to sell your items. However, they have certain limitations such as required numbers of items for sale, areas, etc.
If you intend to sell 50 or more items such as books, games, etc., you can apply for 店舗出張買取, which allows you to sell items without leaving the comfort of your home. The staff will come to your home to evaluate and purchase items. You will be usually paid in cash on the spot, but there is also possibility that you will receive payment via bank transfer after evaluation of the items at the store. In certain areas of Japan such as Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, etc., there is a service called 出張買取センター. If you use this service, your items will be picked up from your home and you do not even need to pack them in the box. You will be paid by bank transfer in about 1-2 weeks.
